A brief overview of the 2016 private equity fundraising landscape with Peter Witte of EY

A brief overview of the 2016 private equity fundraising landscape with Peter Witte of EY

Private Equity Review & Outlook 2016 – Fundraising
With Peter Witte of EY

Peter Witte, EY:
2016 was a very active year for private equity fundraising. The last four years have been very active for PE fundraising. PE firms have raised between $450 to $500 billion for each of the last four years.

PE firms have exited companies valued at $1.2 trillion over the last three years. Exits have outpaced new acquisitions by a ratio of almost 1.5 to 1. So, a lot of cyclical factors are really driving a strong fundraising market right now.

Beyond that, there’s just a lot of secular growth in the asset class. You see existing investors that are increasing their allocations to private equity. You see new investors trying to get exposure to the asset class in terms of retail investors and high net worth, family offices and sovereign wealth funds increasing their exposure to co-mingled funds.

[In] both Asia Pac and the Middle East, [there’s] a lot of money coming from the institutional invest—not just sovereign wealth funds, but institutional investors in general in those regions are committing. They’re getting more comfortable with private equity.
